What a crazy two days! Yesterday morning I woke up to dry faucets, empty toilets, and a sink full of dishes with no way to wash them. The water for the whole street was out. At first, I thought "no big deal!" So I won't take a shower today (it's happened before), who wants to do dishes anyway, we'll eat out for lunch and dinner, I have plenty of milk for the kids and diet dr. pepper for me, we will be fine!
After a few hours, I was getting very frustrated. We could not flush the toilets, wash out sippy cups, clean up spills and messes, give Jack a much needed bath, make any sort of food that needed hydration (ex oatmeal, pancakes, mac and cheese), wash my hands (thank goodness for instant hand sanitizer), brush my teeth, wet a wash cloth to wipe a face, clean my house, and of course...get a drink. I am usually not a huge water drinker. But when I knew there was no water...I was dying! I felt so dry and thirsty. The whole day made me very irritable.
When we found out that our pipes would not be fixed until then next day, we decided to get a hotel. I was stressing out because I typically don't like to stay in hotels with my kids. You either have to keep them up until you are ready for bed or be really quiet while they fall asleep (or in our case with Jack, pretend you are asleep so he gets bored enough to close his eyes). And this all had to happen the night LOST was premiering! How was I going to watch LOST with Layla and Jack in the room?
Since we were given a small reimbursement budget, I had a hard time finding a suitable hotel. Miraculously I found a suite at the Hyatt Summerfield-for a great price-that had a separated sleeping and sitting room. Then we were upgraded at check-in to a two bedroom suite with separated sitting room and kitchen. So, we ordered Papa John's, put the kids to bed in their room, had our little LOST party, and slept great in our own room. It turned out to be a fun night. And after an awesome hotel breakfast buffet, the kids and I came home to running water...all is well again.
So...I learned a few things:
-always have an emergency supply of water (not just for drinking, but for doing other things like brushing teeth and flushing toilets)
-always do your dishes before you go to bed. You may not be able to the next day and nothing makes your kitchen smells worse than rotting food in your sink
-brushing your teeth is a wonderful luxury
-you don't realize how many times you just need a little bit of water to wet something or clean something
-your kids will always get the most dirty when there is no water to clean them up
-the sound of water rushing behind your walls can be the best sound in the world

I'm glad you got to watch LOST! I finished Felicity a couple of days ago so we'll have to talk.
